Fine Free

Jefferson County Library has been fine free since June 16, 2021. Late fines kept people away — now everyone can keep borrowing.

  • Overdue books, movies & musicReturn them when you can.

Good to know

When is an item considered lost?

At 14 days overdue we bill your account for the replacement cost plus a processing fee, and let you know. Bring it back in good condition and the charge is removed.

Will I get a reminder?

Yes — a courtesy email or text goes out 3 days before your due date.

Does fine free mean I can keep items forever?

No. Every item still has a due date, and you're responsible for returning or renewing it on time. Returning items on time helps your neighbors borrow them sooner.

What's the difference between a fine and a fee?

Fines were charged when items came back late. Fees are for services and products — library cards, copying, printing and replacement of lost or damaged items — and those remain.

Will I wait longer for popular items?

Libraries that have gone fine free haven't seen a significant change in return times. Most items come back within a week of their due date.

Why did JCL go fine free?

It's good for our community: people do better when they can reach the materials, programs and services they need, and we hope it welcomes back former users and brings in new ones. It's also fiscally responsible — with more eMaterials (which never had late fines), money from fines and fees had fallen steadily for ten years.

Can I get a refund for fines paid before 2021?

No. Fines paid before June 16, 2021 can't be refunded.
